Vol. 8, No. 15A
4-24-08
On April 29th Microsoft will post XP Service Pack 3 as a Critical Update and most of you will either get it automatically or be notified that there’s an update for you to install. If you remember the debacle surrounding Service Pack 2 you should be concerned.
I’ve mentioned before that SP3 doesn’t seem to change much so it may be a non-issue but it’s here, and I have it. Unfortunately I just obtained it today (I don’t subscribe to MS TechNet at $350-600 per year, thanks, or I could have had it a few days earlier).
I’m installing it as I type this and, since this will drop just five days from now on everyone, I’m going to delay this week’s newsletter until I can do some testing on the final release.
I did a fresh install of XP Professional on one of my testbeds, brought it fully up to date with all available patches and installed normal programs like Spybot, Ad-Aware, Panda, Open Office, Acrobat Reader etc.
I’ll see what it does to the core operations and appearance, what it might break and run some benchmarks to see if the reported performance increase actually exists.
I’ll issue a full newsletter edition over the weekend with a report of what I find along with the usual news, download, cartoon and email question. Hopefully I can give you a Yay or Nay in a day or two.
See you soon…
